Feichengwurao features a single man introduced to 24 female contestants, each of whom have the opportunity to progress through the show and compete for a date with him.
Su Baolu, a 29-year-old doctor at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, had the chance but recently declined an invitation from Jiangsu Satellite TV last week to be a "Mr Right" bachelor on Feichengwurao.
Su was newly registered on Baihe.com, one of the most popular matchmaking websites in China, but declined the wider exposure because he said, "I am not interested in being on TV, I only care about finding my soul mate," Su told the Global Times.
Finding fame - and a mate
A sponsor of Feichengwurao, Baihe has provided several participants to the show and gained wide general exposure as a result. Thousands of singles have registered on the matchmaking website since the show named it as the official site for future candidates, many of whom hope for their 15-minutes of fame as well as the chance to meet Mr or Ms Right.
"My mother asked me to join Baihe because she thinks I can meet the right man on it," said a 27-year-old Beijing woman in the Beijing Baihe registration office in Chaoyang district, "One reason (for joining Baihe) is that those guys selected for TV are really good, but the most important thing is I can become famous and more people will know me."
Wang Xuebing, a 23-year-old train driver, told the Global Times, "It's more than about being famous. Take me for example, my job hardly gives me time to get to know girls, so if I could be on the show, girls will see me and come to me. Even if I'm not selected Baihe will give me a better chance to meet girls."
Too busy for romance
Finding a marriage partner for China's young generation is not easy and the difficulties are increasing.
"Nowadays, it's a little bit different from the last generation to find the right person," Mu Yan, vice president of Baihe told the Global Times. "Many of them are well-educated with good salaries, and hope to have a beautiful life with their mates. But they don't have much time or many chances to get to meet other singles due to job pressures. That's why Feichengwurao and Baihe have become so popular."
